DAY FOUR: Favorite quote. I know it's pretty self explanatory, but this quote came to me when I was going through one of the hardest trials of my life. There were a lot of things people didn't understand about me: why I wasn't in class, why I wasn't at church, why I didn't answer phone calls or text messages, why I wouldn't talk, or let them in on what was going on.
It's because I was numb and trying to not feel the awfulness of the situation I was in. It wasn't anything personal...I didn't know if I wanted to feel and talking made me feel.
I was most grateful to those who were kind and patient with me and just let me work things out. They didn't expect a phone call or status updates, they were just behind the scenes praying and uplifting me by their good works. Overnight I had added caretaker to my already full schedule of school and work and I had no idea what I was doing. I tried to put on a positive face, but I too was scared, lonely, tired, frustrated, emotional, numb, and lost. So many people around had little to no idea what was going on. I'm sure they thought I had gone crazy... I wanted to tell people, but I just didn't know how.
That's why this quote means so much to me. None of us have any real idea what trials people are struggling with when we meet them for the first time, see them in the grocery store, visit teach them, read their status' on facebook or their blog, or get jealous of their vacations, their children, or their lifestyle. There is no reason we cannot be kind and patient with every single person around us. No reason at all. I bet if we really understood their trials, our hearts would be softened and we would have compassion on them...so why not start with that compassion from the beginning?
It makes me wonder why, we as people, are so quick to judge, to get jealous, to gossip, to take offense, to be annoyed, or to purposely hurt another person. It's probably selfishness, insecurities, etc... but I think it's safe to say that everyone has those faults. It's natural and human...so let's accept it and move on already! Let's rise above all of that nastiness and be kind to those around us. From one of my absolutely favorite talks given by Jeffrey R. Holland, The Laborers in the Vineyard:

ReplyDeleteWhat a great quote! Yes, people take things so personally when maybe it's not about them -- maybe someone else is going through something. This is great to remember!! Thank you!
