CHAPTER 14 - TWO YEARS AND FOUR THOUSAND MILES AWAY

The rest of high school flew by in a flash. I worked at Melaleuca's call center full-time that summer and moved to Rexburg at the end of August.

It was just my mom and I that day...moving me in to Colonial House #303. I met a couple of my roommates, but after my mom left, I let myself have a good cry. I was excited for this new adventure, but it was much scarier and lonelier than I imagined. It was just me in the apartment for a few hours, but that evening my roommate Kendra came back and we stayed up and talked into all hours of the night. She was an answer to my prayers.

I went out on quite a few dates and even dated one guy for a while, but by the end of my second semester, I had pretty much made up my mind that Thomas was the one. I had hoped and prayed that he would be since that summer we fell in love, but it was then that I was completely determined to make it be so.

That next fall I began the interior design program. It was hard but so rewarding and invigorating to actually be studying something that was interesting to me. The long hours of homework and a part-time job helped make time fly by.

Just a few classic college pictures...

Thomas thoroughly enjoyed his mission and became best friends with his MTC group.

He served in many different cities in Hungary, even spotted an Idaho license plate...

They took morning jogs to a local castle (where a few popular music videos have been filmed: "Round & Round" and "Firework").

and his last companionship was with one of his best friends from high school! (Remember Jordan? ...he was my other Prom date.)

We wrote each other about once a month, but I also looked forward to every week when he would send his weekly email to his family. I read them from the library since I did not have a computer of my own. I often found myself muffling giggles or wiping away tears as I read about the people he was teaching and the new experiences he was having. I was so proud of him.

His family was also sweet enough to let me bombard the days they got to talk to him on the phone...(I made Chris invite us to the first one, I was too scared. haha.)

And just like that...two years were over.

I made the choice to let the airport homecoming be for just his family. After he was set apart that night, he called me and we talked for nearly an hour. It was a little awkward at first, but by the end it was quite a bit better. The next day, after my drafting class, I packed up the car and drove home for the weekend. I was pretty much freaking out about seeing him again. I didn't know what to expect or what he expected or how it was all going to play out. I gave myself quite the stomach ache about it as I sat watching for his car to come down the road towards my parents house, just like it had two years before...
