I've been running wrong this whole time!

I mentioned last week that I'm finally liking running. It's taken a very long time, but this is what got me motivated to attempt it again, and so far, it has been very successful: Born To Run by Christopher McDougall.

We read it (ok, Thomas read it and told me all about it). We loved it! Can you believe that most of us are running wrong? It's because our shoes are designed with thick soles as cushion for our heels, so we land on our heels first and then roll our foot forward as we go. The REAL way we should be running is with a flat-footed/front-footed impact. This will decrease the impact in our joints and the pains we get in our ankles, knees, and even hips.

Might sound crazy, but it's true. Both Thomas and I have put it to the test! I haven't had any shin splints since running this way and Thomas' bad knee has hardly hurt him at all!

Luckily the weather here in Fort Collins is still warm and beautiful (knock-on-wood). I'm getting use to the mile-high city air and quite enjoying myself!

  1. It's so true! I had to run a mile and a half for a class I took. We had to run at the beginning of the semester and then at the end of the semester hoping to improve our time. My first run was embarrassing. My last run I accidentally forgot my running shoes so I had to run barefoot. I cut my time in half! I promise I didn't "train" as much as my new time made it look. The flat footed running made me soo much faster and I wasn't in any pain so I was able to run the whole thing without stopping. It's pretty amazing!

  2. It should be noted that this is just one school of thought. Plenty of people seem to run just fine the regular way. It works for me though.

  3. running on your toes up hills is the best way to get over them, especially the huge one by your new home! also pumping your arms and leaning forward helps a ton. once you wanna step up your game, vibram five finger shoes are great for the flat footed runner. and you look stylish too!

  4. Looks like you are having a great time in your new home! And congrats on the running! I still don't know if I am brave enough to try it. :) Can't wait to hear more about what you are doing.
